Speaker Summary

KATY HUTCHISON AND RYAN ALDRIDGE:

In “The Story of Bob” Katy clearly describes how alcohol and other drug use, peer pressure and misguided choices in an unchaperoned setting caused the tragic death of her husband Bob.

Katy speaks to professionals and volunteers in the victim service field.  Telling the story of the violent and tragic loss suffered by her family, Katy is able to give the victim advocate vital insight into best practices.  www.katyhutchisonpresents.com

D/SGT TOM MCMENEMY:

D/Sgt McMenemy is currently the Operational Support and Training Coordinator for the Drug Enforcement Section of the Ontario Provincial Police.  This presentation will give an overview of the different schedules of drugs within the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act, part of the Criminal Code, but focus specifically on the most prevalent illegal drugs that officers encounter on their daily duties.  D/Sgt McMenemy will speak about the effects, ways of concealing, street prices and so on,  in regards to the most prevalent drugs.

D/CST WARREN BULMER

Mr. Hoogland was a high school teacher in the Halton Region for 30 years.  Mr. Hoogland was also sexually attracted to boys whom he taught. During his career he was investigated or documented on numerous occasions for misconduct, inappropriate contact with students and other disciplinary matters.   Despite his behaviour, after leaving the Halton Board, Mr. Hoogland was hired by the Toronto District School Board and it wasn’t until then that his predatory nature was discovered. Mr. Hoogland would teach students during the day, and stroll the tracks at night looking for young male prostitutes who in most cases were school drop-outs and of the same age of his students.  He would pay them for various sex acts and to pose naked for photos.  He collected these photos and made them into collages.  It was believed that he had exploited as many as 100 boys in this fashion, victims who were vulnerable for one reason or another, yet seemingly ignored.  This presentation will give the audience a brief overview of the case from the role of the lead investigator, who was willing to speak for the victims even when the school boards and the Justice system let them down. Mr. Hoogland was a predator that slipped through the cracks.

KEVIN MCKENNA

RICK OSBORNE

Rick was born into a loving home, however, by the age of 15 he was already caught up in a world of drugs and crime.  This led to numerous brushes with death from overdoses and gang violence.  By the age of 21 he was one of Canada’s “Most Wanted”.  He was sentenced to 12 years Federal time for a series of armed robberies.  While incarcerated his addiction worsened and after 3 years he escaped and committed more violent robberies.  His sentence was increased to almost 30 years.  He was released on ‘good behaviour’ in 1993 and was so dysfunctional that within 8 weeks he was arrested while in possession of a handgun and cocaine.  When all was said and done, Rick served over 23 years behind bars.

Rick Osborne connects with his audience through the use of open forums to students, parents, corporations, and community groups.  Rick’s straight forward approach allows you to ask questions in an environment that is non-threatening, informative and eye opening.

NADIA MCLEAN

On January 29, 2006 Nadia was driving friends home from a wedding and approached an overpass on Highway 401 near Oshawa when she saw someone extend his arm and dropped a concrete chunk into her windshield.  Her cheek was torn off and facial bones were crushed by the impact.  Nadia has undergone months of reconstructive surgery and despite the trauma, went ahead with her summer wedding.  Police arrested a 14 year old boy in June 2006 and charged him with five counts of mischief endangering life and one account of aggravated assault.  Nadia will meet with the boy prior to sentencing.  She believes that there is less of a chance of him ever doing something like this again if he has to deal with her in facing the victim rather than just go off to jail and get a slap on the wrist.

DEBBIE LAROCQUE

Debbie LaRocque lives with her husband and daughter on St. Joseph Island, a small rural community in Northern Ontario.  This mom knows the importance of being involved in the education of her two children as well as making a difference for all children.  Sadly, on January 7th, 2006 their son Kelly, then 18 years old, died from playing the Choking Game.  Kelly was unaware of the “Deadly” Dangers of this activity.  Now, Debbie has a deep desire to educate children, parents, authorities, actually anyone who will listen, about the Deadly Dangers of this so-called game.  www.deadlygameschildrenplay.com/en/home.asp
